A chief medical officer is a leading professional in a German hospital or medical care center. The chief consultant or senior physician officially takes over the permanent representation of the chief physician or chief medical officer. This means that he or she must be familiar with these duties and responsibilities. In addition to professional expertise, this also includes various management and administrative tasks.

Hospital position

In general, the hierarchy in Germany is decided individually in each hospital. However, the general rule is that the specialist is below the senior physician. The senior physician is subordinate to the chief physician and the medical director. The hospital has several specialist departments or clinics that do the most excellent work possible in their field. Hospitals are also in competition with each other and must therefore  work economically.

The senior physician manages such a clinic within a hospital. That means, on the one hand, he:she has the professional overview and develops the focal points. On the other hand, he/she has the management responsibility for the specialists and assistant physicians and the relationship with the nursing staff. In the event of a dispute between nursing and physicians, the senior physician decides. Depending on the size of the hospital, there may be several senior physicians within a hospital, depending on the sub-area.

A lucrative position

The senior physician is unique in the hospital and has similar knowledge to the chief physician, whom he/she represents.

As the chief physician must bear more and more of the increasing administrative burden, as well as critical funding, this position is involved in up to 70% less patient care.

A chief resident/chief medical officer is aware of these administrative responsibilities. This management position brings with it both more responsibility and, according to the collective bargaining agreement, a higher salary. As a result, the senior physician in this position is more likely to be promoted to the position of chief physician.

Future development

This is a path taken predominantly by men - only 13% of senior physicians are women. However, female senior physicians in university hospitals are much more strongly represented, with an average of 37%.
